Gurmej loves exploring the relevance of Shakespeare’s plays to a modern audience. This is his fourth such role and each time he has been amazed at how the beauty of the language speaks perfectly to the issues of today. As an actor of colour his aim always is to use his life experiences of growing up in a culture different to his heritage to bring interesting insights and nuances to the role.

Gurmej recently played King Hamlet in Hamlet: The Rest is Silence, a collaboration between the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham.
