New artist development scheme announced!

We are proud to unveil the first phase of our support for Oldham artists in 2025, Crafted - a new scheme aimed at nurturing and supporting emerging Oldham theatre artists in their creative journeys.

Crafted will provide vital financial and professional support to early-career theatre artists based in Oldham. Designed to empower emerging creatives, the scheme will offer funding, mentorship, and access to resources to help develop original work and artistic practice.

Open to artists and groups based in Oldham or with roots in the town, the scheme invites applications for original projects that push creative boundaries. Whether it’s an idea being tested for the first time or a work that needs further development, Crafted offers artists the chance to take creative risks, expand their practice, and learn through a dynamic development process.

Selected participants will receive a bursary and additional resources, including design/R&D funding, travel expenses, studio space, and mentorship tailored to their needs. The culmination of the programme will see artists perform a 20-minute work-in-progress at the Library Performance Space on Saturday 29 March 2025, followed by an audience feedback session. This is an incredible opportunity for emerging artists aged 18 and over who have experience in live performance but have yet to receive a commission, to showcase their talent and connect with creative industry professionals.

This new scheme forms part of our overall artist development strategy, with more opportunities to be announced in 2025.

We are also delighted to announce the next instalment and evolution of its popular Culture & Chips series, a free gathering now focused on and for local artists and creatives, taking place on Wednesday, 5 February, 5.30pm to 7pm. This ongoing series brings together the local Oldham creative community to share ideas, collaborate, and gain inspiration, all over a serving of delicious chips.

The upcoming event will feature guest speaker Paul Smith, Artistic Director of Middle Child Theatre, who will share insights on creativity, collaboration, and innovation in the arts. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just beginning your creative journey, this is an opportunity to connect, learn, and be inspired in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Helen Goodman, Artist Development Coordinator at Oldham Coliseum Theatre, said:
“We’re incredibly excited to launch Crafted as part of our commitment to developing northern talent. Oldham is home to passionate artists making really exciting new work, and this initiative offers tools, space to create. We look forward to seeing how this new support helps creative ideas in Oldham thrive. This is part of a wider package of support, more of which will be announced soon. I am also delighted to welcome Paul Smith to Oldham and am excited for him to share insights from his experience from Middle Child and to meet more and more artists here in Oldham."

Martina Murphy, Chair of the Board of Oldham Coliseum Theatre, added: "This new artist development scheme and Culture & Chips events reflect our dedication to investing in the artistic future of Oldham. By supporting emerging talent and connecting with local artists, we’re proud to play a part in enriching our community’s cultural life."

Oldham Coliseum Theatre Ltd is a charity, which since the closure of its Fairbottom Street base in 2023 has been producing and presenting a programme of theatre and creative opportunities for local people, including the popular Khushi Festival, a celebration of South Asian arts.  The Oldham Coliseum Theatre Ltd’s programme is supported by Oldham Council, Arts Council England and Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

These artist development schemes and events accompany our new production announced last month The Engagement Party, a specially commissioned production inspired by and set in Oldham that will be performed at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Tuesday 18 – Saturday 22 February 2025).

Applications close for Crafted at midnight on Sunday 9 February 2025. For more information, find out more here or contact info@coliseum.org.uk for access support.
