The Coliseum Opens

Reassembled on Fairbottom Street, the Coliseum launches as a live entertainment venue. Music halls, laughter, and drama begin.

1887

Music, Movies, and Mayhem

From music hall to ‘talkie theatre’. The Coliseum hosts music and early film - including Charlie Chaplin (allegedly!).

1900

The Repertory Era Begins

Revived as a repertory theatre by Oldham Rep Club. Ghost light lit once more, careers are born here. Stories of ghosts and legends come to life.

1935

A Theatre for the People

Owned by Oldham Council, it becomes a beacon for the town’s cultural life attracting the big names of the day, including Dame Thora Hird.

1960

A Home for New Work

The theatre becomes renowned for producing and premiering exciting new work, many under the direction of Kenneth Alan Taylor

1980

The Curtain Falls (Temporarily)

Closed after funding is withdrawn - but not forgotten. A movement begins. Community, celebrities, and artists rally to bring the theatre back.

2023

The Stage Prepares

With scaffolding up at Fairbottom street, theatre and performance continues to be shared in other venues across Oldham.
